The countdown is running for the German Expo Pavilion
Six months left until the World Expo 2025 Osaka opens its gates in Japan
Starting on 13 April 2025, Expo 2025 will run for six months in Osaka, Japan. Currently under construction, the German Pavilion of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action is designed along its circular economy theme and is anticipated to attract more than three million visitors. The circular buildings made of steel and wood will stand as an exponent for circular and sustainable construction. The immersive exhibition is currently being assembled as well and will then be incorporated into the buildings.
The basic framework of the German Expo Pavilion is made from 132 tonnes of steel and 140 tonnes of wood. “The pavilion itself will stand as an exponent for circular and sustainable building in its own right – every conceptual draft decision follows the objective of creating a tangible example of this. The steel foundation will be reused, whilst the wooden structure of the cylinders is filled out with prefabricated panels that symbolise sustainable façade materials. The pavilion’s architecture combines research with industrial products. Even the landscape will show how built and natural environments interact in cycles,“ explains Christian Tschersich, German Pavilion architect at LAVA – Laboratory for Visionary Architecture.
For GL events, members of the Consortium of the Pavilion, their construction is running on schedule. “Despite several challenges, we are making favourable progress with the construction of the initial structures. The first wooden cylinders of the German Pavilion are rising up from the ground,“ is how Thomas Quemin, Managing Director at GL events Japan KK describes the progress.
Preparations for the exhibition on circular economy, organised by facts and fiction, are also in their final phase. The creative agency, its partners and service providers are currently finalising the design and construction of the exhibits that immersively and entertainingly showcase the projects and products of the circular economy “made in Germany“. “The exhibition planning has now entered into its hot phase. All content, ideas and drafts for the exhibits and immersive spaces we have been developing for the past months are now finally becoming reality. Mock-ups help us apply the finishing touches and already give the Expo that “alive” feeling. This heightens everyone’s excitement and anticipation for Osaka,” Dr Wiebke Hahn, concept designer at facts and fiction sums it up.
The team at Koelnmesse that is responsible for organising and running the pavilion on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action likewise expresses their optimism. “We are currently getting ready to move off to Japan and eagerly anticipate the privilege of welcoming the first visitors to the German Pavilion in exactly six months‘ time,“ states Christopher Hecker, Director of the German Expo Pavilion.
Background Information
The next World Expo will take place from 13 April to 13 October 2025 in Osaka where the theme will be “Designing Future Society for Our Lives”. About 150 countries are estimated to participate in what will be the third Expo in Japan, after Osaka in 1970 and Aichi in 2005. The organisers are expecting more than 28 million visitors.
Koelnmesse GmbH will be organising and running the German Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.
